Both teams have the word 'flying' in their nickname, Flying Antelopes and Flying Angels, but today at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu one outsoared the other.
Mercifully for Nigeria, it was the home team the Enugu Rangers that beat USMB of Algeria 2:0 to advance to the next stage of the Caf Confederation Cup.
Buoyed by the backing of thousands of their fans and knowing that a result here, regardless of how minuscule, would knock out the North Africans, the Nigerian Federation Cup holders found USMB relatively easy to crack.
Mercifully the first goal came early, courtesy of a perfect Chiamaka Madu pass that Bright Silas pounces on and converts. With less than six minutes played it was Rangers 1 USMB 0.
With everyone sitting on eggshells and being pricked by the pins and needles of anticipating the next goal, the game unfolded nervously at first but then picked up in pace and fluidity. Nerves finally settled.
And then again. Just before the intermission and responding to the home fans baying of "All we are saying give us more goals...." Silas Bright completes his brace. Rangers 2 USMB 0. The stadium is going crazy as the Ref whistles for the intermission.
When the final whistle came the fans erupted in communal joy, and soon the famous anthem that used to ring out from the Enugu rafters as far back as the 1970s engulfed the stadium. Just hearing the "Holy Holy Holy Enugu Rangers another champion" made the goose bumps appear and one wonder if the team in the all-white were on the verge of returning to their rightful place in African club football.
Their fans certainly think so, and will be quick to remind any doubters that considering the Lobi game yesterday, a most important score remains outside that of the game :
