Calistus Anyichie, a 19-year-old Nigerian NBA prospect and forward with Binghamton University men’s basketball team, died on Sunday, July 14, in a drowning accident.
According to reports citing Ithaca Journal, Anyichie drowned at Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca, New York. Binghamton University announced Anyichie’s death on Monday, July 15, even as head coach Tommy Dempsey paid tribute to the departed.
. There is no blueprint for how to deal with such a painful loss,” Binghamton head coach Tommy Dempsey noted.
“We all loved Calistus so much. He was a special young man. We are devastated.”
Meanwhile, local authorities recovered Anyichie’s body was found at the base of a 15-foot bank, with the Journal claiming rescue crews pull his body from the ravine at about 5:00 pm on Sunday, July 14, with the aid of a rope .
Reacting on the incident, University president Harvey Stenger said: "A talented young person has been tragically taken from us.
