If not for the flawless and quick intervention of the Imo State Fire service yesterday on the Owerri- Port Harcourt Road, Owerri we would be telling a different story today.
It would have been a very sad one.
This is because a tanker spilt circa 30,000 litres of premium motor spirit on the major highway after being rammed by another vehicle causing its tank to be punctured.
The incident was a quick reminder of series of ongoing fuel tanker explosions that rocked some cities in the country especially in Onitsha where such an accident scorched part of Onitsha- Ochanja market leading to loss of lives and property worth millions of naira
.
The Awareness was informed that the tanker was on it way to Ebere Links Filling Station when the vehicle rammed into the tanker, ruptured it, and caused the spillage which understandably, raised tension and concern among pedestrians and motorists who raised the alarm.
The arrival of operatives of Fire Service, in a timely manner as well as the use of fire retardants quickly brought the scene under control and restored normalcy.
Imo State Governor, Hon.Emeka Ihedioha, later arrived the scene of the incident, where he commended the State fire service, for their prompt intervention and promised his Government's total support to make sure they become one of the leading Fire Services in West Africa.
Just in September, he launched new state of the art trucks that participated in today's response.
